CalDigit Mini Dock

$129.99 From CalDigit, caldigit.com Dimensions 4.8x2.6x0.7in (excluding cable)

DESIGN

This dock is wrapped in a dark grey metal, with plastic front and back panels. There’s a 7–inch Thunderbolt 3 cable on the opposite side — sadly it’s non–detachable and sticks out, limiting dock stowability in a small pocket.

VIDEO PORTS

This dock has two versions, with two of either HDMI2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2. We tested the former; more later on a catch with the latter. You can run two 4K displays at 60Hz. Port uniformity may require using an adapter at times.

OTHER CONNECTIVITY

You get two USB–A ports: 3.0 (5Gbps) and 2.0 (480Mbps). The latter is okay for an undemanding device — a mouse, say — but the DisplayPort model ($119.99) omits it. There’s also Gigabit Ethernet for when Wi–Fi is unavailable.

VALUE

Neither of these docks looks like great value when you consider USB–C alternatives can be picked up for less. But that kind tends to have one video output; these models support two displays. CalDigit’s premium feel and second USB–A port are welcome features that are missing from its rival.
