Dark Mode for websites

This one is macOS–only, at least until iOS gains a system–wide Dark Mode. Web designers can implement special style sheets to make pages easier on the eyes when Dark Mode is turned on in macOS 10.14.4 or later.

A smarter search field

When you type in Safari for iOS’s Smart Search Field, notice the arrows at the end of some suggestions’ rows. Tap one of those to fill that suggestion into the search field, then continue typing any additional terms you want.

More noticeable insecurity

Safari shows a lock icon in the search field when the site you’re viewing is using a secure connection. The new version shows “Not secure” there to indicate a site poses a risk.

Screen Time granularity

When you’ve set App Limits, you can temporarily turn off all or specific limits using the switches at the top of Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, and within each limit you’ve set. You can also set different limits per day.

Siri control of Apple TV

Apple’s voice–driven assistant on your iPhone or iPad is now capable of handling instructions to play content to Apple TV/ AirPlay 2–compatible TVs. Say something like, “Hey Siri, play Doctor Who on Apple TV.”

Third–party content

Siri even looks for content in third–party apps. If it finds multiple matches, it offers the choice. For iOS to act as a controller but Apple TV do the streaming, turn on Settings > AirPlay > Play Purchases from iCloud on the latter.

AirPlay controls for TV

When iOS detects audio or video content playing on your Apple TV, it now shows extra controls on its Lock screen (and in Control Centre): a button to reveal a virtual Siri Remote, and one to choose audio and subtitle options.

AirPlay, uninterrupted

AirPlay now multitasks when you play audio or video in another app — such as from a website in Safari. The latter plays on iOS while the first app streams to your TV — at least if it’s the TV app; we found others may still stop.

Apple Pay receipts

It takes fewer steps to check a transaction has gone through. Tap a bank card in Wallet, and your last payment is shown. (You can still tap “…” for a longer history, and to turn off payment notifications for individual cards.)

Air quality in Maps

When Maps is zoomed in close enough to a location, the weather widget at the bottom right of the map contains an extra detail: AQI followed by an air quality index number for the location you’re looking at.
