Apps and visibility

-

1 SINGLE WINDOW

Click and hold any app’s icon in the Dock to show which windows it has open. Select one to bring just that window to the front, while keeping the app you’re using visible.

2 EXPOSURE THERAPY

Press Ctrl+Down for Exposé, which shows all of the windows open (in all Spaces) in the current app. Some apps also show recently opened files as thumbnails below.

3 SIDE BY SIDE

Hover over the Full Screen (green) button at the top–left of any window and pick Tile Window to Left of Screen. Click any window thumbnail on the right to split–screen with it.

4 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Press Ctrl+Up (or swipe up with four fingers on your Magic Trackpad) for Mission Control, which shows all windows open in all apps; click one to go to it.

5 FILL UP THE SPACES

Often ignored, Spaces lets you create multiple desktops with different windows open and flick between them. Open Mission Control (see above) and click + at the top–right. A second desktop thumbnail appears at the top. Close Mission Control (press Esc). Now press Ctrl+Right and Ctrl+Left to switch between Spaces. Each shows the same files (if any) on your Desktop, but you can open different Finder windows. In any app, drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen to move it to a different Space. Apps running full–screen get their own Space. In Mission Control, move the cursor to the top of the screen to reveal your Spaces. Find more options in System Prefs > Mission Control. Using Spaces can sometimes be confusing, but it may be a good way to keep your screen organized when working on several different projects, or for work versus home.
