HOW TO RESTORE BATTERY LIFE AFTER iOS 14 UPGRADES?

This should settle when iOS has been brought up to date and your phone’s been running it for a while. Some do a full factory reset, but that seldom does much. Check which apps are using most power at the foot of Settings > Battery and limit wasteful apps.

HOW TO TURN OFF MY iPHONE’S PERSONAL HOTSPOT?

In iOS and iPadOS 13.1 or later, you can’t turn off Personal Hotspot unless you disable your mobile connection or turn Airplane Mode on. It’s always available to other devices on the same iCloud account and through Family Sharing, but you control whether to allow others to join.

WHAT IS CUH? IT’S SLOWING MY MAC?

CUH is a process which can appear in Activity Monitor taking up excess CPU, and is part of CorelDRAW for Mac. If that’s installed and you’re having problems, contact Corel support. If you’ve removed the app, it may need separate uninstalla­tion, try searching for it and manually removing it.

WHY HAS MY NEW ANTI– VIRUS DISABLED MAPS?

> Maps relies on the internet for its data. If the anti–virus software is blocking that, Maps will either look blank, or contain limited info. If you want to carry on using that protection, read its documentat­ion carefully, but you’d probably be better off using a different product.

DO I NEED TO INSTALL JAVA FOR MINECRAFT?

The Minecraft game is available in Java and Bedrock Editions. The latter has been ported to other platforms including iOS, but isn’t available for macOS. Minecraft Java Edition is available for Mac, and should come bundled with the correct version of Java to work well.

WHERE HAVE TOP SITES GONE?

Safari 14 removes Top Sites, replacing them with Favorites, which aren’t the same. Try the options for the Start Page at its lower– right corner. These let you add the Frequently Visited links to the Start Page, which may work as a substitute.

CAN MACOS SAVE DISK SPACE USING AUTO COMPRESSIO­N?

System files have been doing this since OS X 10.6, but this feature hasn’t been well supported for users or developers. This changes in Big Sur with the arrival of AppleArchi­ve, although that’s not intended for use for whole volumes.

WHERE CAN I SEE WHICH APPS HAVE BEEN UPDATED?

The closest macOS comes is in System Informatio­n. Select the Installati­ons item under Software to show updates and software installati­ons made using installers, including system software, and from the App Store. This doesn’t include apps which use their own updaters, or which have been moved to the Applicatio­ns folder.

DOES MACOS EVER CHECK MY DISK FOR MALWARE?

XProtect checks for malicious software. In 10.15 and later, this checks all software you open, not just recent downloads, against its list of known malware, which is updated every couple of weeks.

HOW BEST TO CHECK AND REPAIR MY STARTUP DISK?

Unless you’ve got a bootable external disk running the same version of macOS, start up in Recovery mode, open Disk Utility and select the startup volumes, then run First Aid.
