Master the Home app in iOS 14

Control all your smart devices with the updated Home app

- CLIFF JOSEPH

HOMEKIT IS A bit like Siri

— it’s an impressive piece of tech that has never really fulfilled its potential. It’s a great idea because it allows smart devices such as light bulbs, speakers and security cameras to work together and be controlled via the central Home app. That’s a lot easier than constantly switching back and forth between several apps provided by different manufacturers.

However, the Home app itself can be rather confusing at times, spreading controls and settings across a whole series of menus and screens. Thankfully, Apple’s most recent software updates — iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and Big Sur on the Mac — gave the Home app a facelift.

Control Center on iPhones and iPads now provides instant access to your most important devices, and the Home app itself has been redesigned to make it easier to select and control devices in different rooms. And, since the launch of Big Sur, the Mac version of the Home app now works more consistently across all your Macs and mobile devices too.
