If you like creating your own personalized playlists in apps such as Apple Music or Spotify, you’ll probably find that the automatically selected artwork isn’t always to your taste. It’s not a huge problem, we know, but sometimes it’s the little problems that are the most annoying — and Denim is a little app with a little price tag to solve this one.
Denim is a straightforward cover image creator. Simply choose the design you want, save it to your Photos library, then add it to the appropriate playlist using the playlist editor in the Apple Music or Spotify app. You can choose by
color, genre, era, or theme. Although you can’t edit the contents of the images, for example by replacing the text, there’s a range of options to choose from. The core app is free but you’ll need to unlock the $1.99 Pro version to access all the images: the free selection is very small.
Because Denim doesn’t do much the quality and range of its images is key, and to our eyes the selection is quite basic and rather clichéd: the graphic for a Hot Hits playlist is a red chilli pepper; Rap Life is a picture of some graffiti; Road Trip is, inevitably, a road. There’s a bit of a “cheap compilation CD bought from a gas station” vibe to it all.
That’s not to say Denim is a bad app. It does exactly what it’s designed to do, and does it well. But the key consideration here is going to be whether you like its graphic design.
THE BOTTOM LINE. Denim is a capable app but its range is limited. CARRIE MARSHALL
