Plugable USB–C 7–in–1 Hub
Diminutive hub, plus Ethernet
$50 From Plugable Technologies, plugable.com Features 2x USB 3.0, SD, Micro SD, HDMI, 1X USB–C, Ethernet
We’re big fans of Apple’s M1–powered MacBooks, but only two Thunderbolt 3 USB–C ports are definitely a limitation. Plugable’s svelte USB–C 7–in–1 Hub with Ethernet addresses these shortcomings. The aluminum–encased hub turns a single USB–C port into a pair of 5Gbps USB 3.0 ports, SD and MicroSD card readers, HDMI with DisplayPort 1.4 support for up to 4K 60Hz output, one USB–C Power Delivery passthrough port for keeping a connected MacBook charged while in use, and a single wired Gigabit Ethernet port, which lights up while the network is active.
This compact, rugged unit is the only dongle most MacBook owners will ever need. It does get a little warm when in use — especially with an optional charger supplying up to 87W of power, while reserving 7.5W for attached devices — but we’re happy to report it works great, even with all seven ports in active use.
THE BOTTOM LINE. An inexpensive, pocket–sized USB–C dongle to rule them all. JR BOOKWALTER
