Needs macOS 10.11 or later; free Epson ScanSmart Accounting Edition software; USB 2.0 and/or 802.11 b/g/n Wi–Fi; iOS 10.0 or later with free Epson Document Scan app

Despite the proliferation of mobile “document scanner” apps, nothing quite beats the quality and convenience of real hardware. Designed with this in mind, Epson’s RapidReceipt RR-70W is a compact battery-powered portable document scanner weighing less than 11oz and measuring 10.7 x 1.8 x 1.3in.

With support for pages up to 72in long, it works wirelessly or via the included USB–A cable, which can be used with TWAIN–compliant desktop software as well as to power and recharge the unit. With Wi–Fi enabled, we were able to scan more than 100 pages on a single charge.

Although lacking an automatic document feeder, the RR–70W’s optional automatic feeding mode is the next best thing, automatically pulling each sheet as it’s inserted without having to press Scan over and over again. Scanning a single page takes around four seconds.

Equally important, 600dpi optical text quality and optical character recognition accuracy are both quite good. Even photos fare well, although detail and color fidelity are no match for Epson’s more expensive FastFoto FF-680W.

The bundled ScanSmart desktop software also manages receipts and invoices, extracting text and numeric data into digital equivalents for export to third–party software or JPEG/PDF files. It’s basic but requires no subscription and works on multiple computers.

THE BOTTOM LINE. Ditch those scanner apps and buy the real thing instead.
