> Big Sur and optical drives

Since upgrading to Big Sur, every time I insert a blank DVD in my external player, it opens up in Toast instead of appearing on my Desktop. How can I change that?

-

Big Sur still provides controls over what to do when optical discs are inserted in internal and external drives. What’s potentially confusing is that the CDs & DVDs pane only appears in System Preferences when the drive is connected and powered up. Trying to open the DigiHubDiscs pane from the PreferencePanes folder on Big Sur’s System volume fails similarly. Connect your optical drive and once it’s been recognized open that pane and set the action you want when a blank disc is inserted. If the pane doesn’t appear it’s because your drive isn’t fully supported by Big Sur, and needs replacing with a compatible model.

CAN TIME MACHINE TO APFS SUPPORT NETWORK STORAGE?

Yes, but don’t try doing this with an existing backup, as they can’t be converted to APFS. Get Time Machine to create a new backup set, which should come as an APFS format sparsebundle on the share.

HOW DO I REPLACE THE BATTERY IN MY MAGIC TRACKPAD 2?

The rechargeable battery inside Apple’s Magic Trackpad 2 isn’t user replaceable. Although you could try persuading Apple or a third–party to replace it, the cost would be prohibitive. It’s cheaper to buy new and send the old for recycling.

?? ?? Unless your optical drive is connected and powered, an attempt to open what becomes the CD & DVDs pane will fail.
Once connected and operational, control settings for the optical drive using that pane and Finder dialogs.
