How to create custom widgets in iOS 14 using Widgetsmith

IT WILL TAKE 5 minutes

WHEN APPLE LAUNCHED iOS 14, it heralded a new era for the iPhone. One of the biggest new features was the introduction of widgets, which can display snippets of information from the app of your choice on your Home screen.

Although Apple has opened the widget system to third–party developers, there’s not as much control as you might like. Apple’s apps allow for little visual customization — if you don’t like how they look, you’re stuck.

Widgetsmith does an excellent job at solving that. It has a wide range of widgets that can be tuned to your liking. What’s more, the app opens the way to Home screen customization that simply wasn’t possible before, letting you create a theme that matches your taste. The basic version of the app is free and includes most of what you need, although there is a paid–for version ($1.99 per month) that includes widgets for weather and tides. We won’t need that today, though. ALEX BLAKE
