Made for iPhone, iPod touch Needs iOS 14.2 or later

Do you have a lot of downloaded or ripped high quality audio? Then Doppler 2 was made for you. It’s a hi–res audio player designed for FLAC and WAV audio as well as MP3 and AAC, and it keeps your music on your device so it’s always available to play.

You’ll see that Version 2 is a complete rewrite of the original app with an improved interface, more controls with songs and playlists, and the ability to transfer songs to the app over Wi–Fi. You can also pull music from cloud storage or Music Library and via the iOS share sheet in Safari.

The interface is simple, but you won’t find features such as bass boosts or graphic EQs. However if you’re listening to hi–res tracks on good–quality headphones, you shouldn’t need such adjustments: Doppler 2 sounds as good as your listening equipment allows.

In addition to the expected play and playlist controls, you can also edit song and album data. If you give access to your Apple Music library (your downloads, not the streaming songs), Doppler will happily pull in all the relevant information and artwork and change the on–screen colors to match the cover.

Doppler 2 isn’t going to dethrone Spotify or Apple Music, but then it isn’t designed to: it’s a high quality music player, not a streamer. Rather like the original iPod.

THE BOTTOM LINE. Doppler 2 is a focused alternative to the Music app. CARRIE MARSHALL
