The benchmark against which all others are judged, 1Password is the most successful of all. It handles nearly anything, and can store your secrets in its own local vault, or one in iCloud or DropBox. It lets you share your secrets with others, even if they don’t use 1Password, via a link.

Its macOS app isn’t quite as friendly as it could be, and seems to have been designed more for consistency with versions on other platforms. Its iOS app also had a tendency to prompt for the master password despite being set to use FaceID, which could present a serious problem when you’re out and about. However, clicking through its password prompt without entering anything still unlocked access.

Version 8 — tested last issue, and due any time soon — may be a backward step for Mac users as support for local vaults is slated to be removed. The app moves to using cross–platform Electron, rather than being native to macOS.
