HOW TO USE LIVE TEXT

-

1

LOOK THINGS UP

Live Text works automatically; if you see text in a photo, you can highlight it. Here, we’ve highlighted a mattress label, pressed and held it, and then tapped on Look Up to search the Web for its name. 2

COPY AND QUOTE

We’re constantly grabbing images of interesting bits in books, and Live Text makes that effortless: when you see the live text icon in the bottom of the screen, you can tap it and the text instantly becomes selectable. 3

GRAB ALMOST ANYTHING Here we’re grabbing the ingredients from a digital magazine in the Readly app. We’ve also tried it on business cards, cartoon strips and all kinds of printed text and it’s worked effortlessly every time.

The revised Maps has a new interactive globe view that lets you see, spin, and swoop down on the Earth from space. It’s silky–smooth, very fast, and lots of fun to mess around with. It also has a fantastically detailed new 3D map view — although right now that’s only available for a few cities, so for example you can view London but not Edinburgh. Where it’s available it’s more like looking at The Sims than a traditional map, and it makes it much easier to see what an area is like.

If you use your iPad for planning trips you’ll appreciate the improved public transport directions; there are also new augmented reality (AR) directions you can use if you take your iPad out with you. Apple is playing catch–up with Google Maps here, but that’s fine with us: as much as we like Google’s mapping accuracy we much prefer Apple’s approach to privacy, so it’s good to feel that by sticking with Apple we aren’t missing out on any must–have features.
