iOS keyboard tricks

-

Knowing your way around your iOS keyboard will make it quicker and easier to type anything you want Find hidden 50 characters

The iOS keyboard itself is full of shortcuts. For example, try long–pressing on the various keys and you’ll bring up alternate characters and symbols that you can swipe along to select and, after turning on the “Shortcut” in Settings > General > Keyboard, you can double–tap the spacebar to add a full stop.

Shift the 51 keyboard

If you long–press on the emoji icon, you’ll bring up a keyboard menu that lets you shift it to the left or right of the screen. This is designed to make it easier to type one–handed while holding your iPhone. This is a shortcut to the “One– Handed Keyboard” option in Settings > General > Keyboard.

Format menu 52

If you tap on any text that you have written you’ll bring up the floating format menu. This provides cut, copy and paste options, a style menu that you can tap on to change the appearance of the text and, if you tap the arrow, more options for Look Up, Translate, and Share.

Slide to type 53

One of the best typing shortcuts is the “Slide to Type” feature. Make sure it is turned on in Settings > General > Keyboard and then you can press and hold on the first letter and then, keeping your finger pressed, slide to the next letters in the word and then release to type it.

54 3D Touch everything

3D Touch is a feature within iOS that allows you to access key features of apps without actually launching the apps first. Typically, if you long–press on the icon of any Apple app, then a pop–up menu will appear that allows you to do things. Experiment and see what you can find, but it certainly works well for Mail and Messages.

55 Use Control Center

3D Touch works in Control Center as well. By long–pressing on the timer icon, for example, you can set a quick timer. You can also long–press on the Bluetooth or Wi–Fi icons to quickly connect to new networks and devices — or you can even pick a new AirPlay device by long–pressing on the icon in the playback controls.

56 Use Quick Actions

Similar to macOS, iOS allows you to access a series of Quick Actions in most apps by tapping the share icon. On the resulting screen, you can scroll down to view a series of actions and then tailor them to your needs by tapping “Edit Actions”. On top of that, you can even include time–savers created in the Shortcuts app in your list of actions.
