HOW TO Start inputting details into your family tree
Start your tree
Open MacFamilyTree and choose New Family Tree… Click the Interactive Tree link as recommended. You’ll see a blank tree with a Create First Person button. Click this to create your first unnamed person.
Add relatives
Once complete, click Add Relatives and choose whether to add a mother, father, child, or partner. Fill in their basic details then move on to the next person in your tree. Leave any unknown information blank for now.
Assign head shots
Tick the box next to your family member’s name under Assigned Entries and a bounding box will appear. Position and resize this around the person’s head to create the thumbnail that’s shown on charts and trees.
Fill in the blanks
Use the Actions window on the right to enter the person’s basic details — if you’re starting with yourself, this should be straightforward! Enter your name, additional names (if married) and birth date into the relevant areas.
Attach photos
Select a person in your tree and scroll down the edit pane to the Media section. Click Add Media to add photos from various sources — including your scanner. Choose the file option for photos not in your Photos library.
Add more people
If two or more people are shown in a particular photo, roll your mouse over Assigned Entries and click Add Assigned Entry to attach the media to other people, places, and events by selecting them from the list.
Input places
When you click on a Place field, enter the town or city under Place, then click Lookup Coordinate… to locate it on a map. Select the correct entry from the options and click Assign followed by Save to record it.
Edit photos
Your first photo will become the thumbnail image on the Interactive Tree. Click the Settings button and choose Edit Media to edit its title. Click the Colorize & Crop button to add realistic color to black and white pics.
Switch to family view
Select Families for an overview of a family — partners, their parents and children — as well as to enter relevant events (such as marriage details). You can attach family photos and record any other shared info here.
