Don’t let the name confuse you: Asustor isn’t about PCs, but specializes in NAS and security systems. The Drivestor 2 Pro is aimed at families and SOHO, and is unique among those tested in using a four–core ARM processor, and having only 2 GB of memory. It delivers some of the best performance at around 100 MB/s when transferring larger files. And it also backs up happily at a decent speed.
Configuration is straightforward, and offers enhanced macOS compatibility with Samba VFS modules. For those looking beyond backup and file sharing it has an extensive library of apps, and hardware support for transcoding and streaming 10–bit 4K H.256 video, which could make it ideal as a media server.
Although the cheapest of the systems tested, build quality is excellent. Its three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports also make it expandable as your needs grow.
