Siri and Accessibility

-

Siri, Apple’s Voice Assistant, is normally controlled with your voice. That can be a problem for anyone with a speech impairment or who has no speech at all. To get around that problem, Apple enables you to type requests for Siri instead. Siri will still answer using a combination of speech and screen display.

To enable this, go to System Prefs > Accessibility and choose Siri in the sidebar. Check the box next to “Enable Type to Siri”. The next time you click the Siri icon in the menu bar or hold the Siri keyboard shortcut (the F5 key with a microphone on it), you will be able to type your Siri request. With regard to the keyboard shortcut, you can change it to anything you like in System Prefs > Siri, by choosing an option from the Keyboard Shortcut menu. You can also turn off Siri’s voice feedback here and enable or disable Siri in the menu bar.

If you would rather speak to Siri than type to attract its attention, check the “Listen for Hey Siri” box.
