Intego’s offering is actually two separate packages: VirusBarrier covers the anti–malware side of things, while NetBarrier is a two–way firewall, meaning your Mac monitors outgoing connections from your apps as well as attempts to connect to your Mac from over the internet.

VirusBarrier scores highly on all lab tests, and dealt with our malware samples with ease, although interestingly quarantined items aren’t automatically removed from your Mac, simply crippled. Its scan times are far quicker than anything else on test and offers browser protection

for both Firefox and Safari (but not Chrome).

The firewall is easy to configure — you’ll get prompted each time apps attempt to connect, and you can set up different configurations for different locations. There are no other extras provided, which is a bit annoying, but when it comes to core protection, Intego is the app we’ll be relying on.
