IPhone too easily muted
I keep accidentally muting my iPhone, causing missed calls. How can I stop this?
Unlike volume controls, you can’t disable the Mute switch. Some people inset it in a cover, which makes it harder to toggle. Another help is to turn on vibration in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, so when your phone rings you should be more aware of it.
Many covers make the switch so hard to use that you need to set up another way of muting your phone. Currently, Mute is only offered in the Control Center on iPads, not iPhones. There are two good alternatives — you can use a Back Tap or an on– screen button as the control.
In iOS 14 and later, you can customize the Back Tap feature to toggle muting. In Settings, tap Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, at the bottom of the list, then choose either a double or triple tap, and set its action to Mute.
The other way is to use AssistiveTouch. In Settings, tap Accessibility > Touch again and locate AssistiveTouch at the top. Turn that feature on and tap Customize Top Level Menu. To add a control, tap “+” followed by the “+” within that new icon. Check off Mute in the menu, and the control changes into a soft Mute switch. To use it, enable AssistiveTouch and its floating button gives easy access, while disabling AssistiveTouch removes its button. As with Back Tap, when you tap the Mute control the new setting is shown on screen.
