Mac stuck in Afghanistan

-

When I performed a clean install of Big Sur on an old MacBook Air the installer never asked me my country, and has set that as Afghanistan. How can I correct that?

While you can change the Mac’s settings in the Language & Region pane, that install hasn’t run correctly, and it’s worth repeating it to ensure that you do get that initial step in its personalization process right. The most reliable way to do that is in Recovery mode, where you can format the internal storage first. Before doing that it’s worth erasing the NVRAM, by starting up with the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys held until it restarts a second time, which is more easily told if its startup chime is enabled. Another option is to prepare an external bootable installer containing the version of macOS you want to install, starting up from that, formatting the internal storage and installing macOS from that external drive.

If that still doesn’t work, you can get by with careful setting of the region in System Prefs > Language & Region, but there’s always the danger your MacBook Air will decide that it’s really in Afghanistan — which isn’t good.
