HOW TO Sort your music libraries

-

Consolidate your library

Consolidating your music library places copies of all your music to one folder and leaves originals in place. In Music, choose File, then Library, and Organize Library. Check the box next to “Consolidate files” and click OK.

Tell Music about the folder

Now, you need to tell Music where the folder is. Go to Music > Preferences > Files. Click Change and go to the new library folder. Click Open to set it as your default Music library.

Find a music file on Mac

If you’re not sure where a song is stored, click Songs in the Music sidebar, locate the song, select it and click the File menu then choose “Show in Finder”. If “Show in Finder” is grayed out, the file isn’t on your Mac.

Move your Music folder

Once you’ve consolidated, moving your music is just a matter of copying the ~/Music/ Music folder in the Finder to a new location. You can also delete the original versions of the songs you consolidated in step 1 to save space.

Use a different library

If you have multiple libraries, you can choose which one to use when you launch Music. Hold Opt when you double–click the Music icon, click Choose Library, go to the Music Library file, and click Choose Library.

Change import location

By default, imported files are moved to the folder that houses the rest of your music, usually ~/Music/Music. To change that, go to Music > Preferences > Files and uncheck “Copy Files to Music Media Folder when adding…”
