IPhone 14 Pro

Pro line–up leaps even further ahead

-

ON TOP OF the enhancements and new features in iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus — including Emergency SOS via satellite, and Crash Detection powered by a high–G accelerometer — the Pro versions offer even more advances.

iPhone 14 Pro also comes in two screen sizes: 6.1–inch, starting at $999, and 6.7–inch, starting at $1,099. Both models have a new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion (adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, depending on what is being displayed) and an Always–On display for the first time on iPhone, enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and multiple power– efficient technologies. This makes the new iOS 16 Lock Screen even more useful, allowing you to check the time, widgets, and Live Activities (when they become available) at a glance. Doing this outdoors becomes more comfortable too: the outdoor peak brightness rises to 2,000 nits, which is twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro.

There’s an even bigger change in the display: the notch is gone, thanks to the proximity sensor now detecting light from behind the display and the front TrueDepth camera being 31% smaller. It’s still there, but now almost imperceptible within the new Dynamic Island, a display animation that starts as a floating pill shape a little smaller than the notch but changes size and shape depending on what information it is showing.

Speaking of cameras, the Pro line’s camera system has had an even bigger upgrade than the regular iPhone’s. In addition to the Photonic Engine, Action mode video, and a new f/1.9– aperture TrueDepth front camera with autofocus, the Pro three–camera system on the rear now boasts a 48MP main camera with a new quad–pixel sensor, 65% larger than the sensor in iPhone 13 Pro. For most photos, this sensor combines every four pixels into one large “quad pixel” equivalent to 2.44 nanometers, resulting in amazing low– light capture and outputting images at a practical 12MP. It also enables a new 2x Telephoto option that reads just the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor, producing photos and 4K videos with a zoomed–in field of view but full 12MP resolution.

With detail optimized by a new machine learning model designed specifically for the quad–pixel sensor, the Pro models now shoot ProRAW at 48MP with an unprecedented level of detail, enabling new creative workflows for pro users. Combined

with second–gen sensor–shift optical image stabilization and a redesigned adaptive TrueTone flash with an array of nine LEDs that change pattern based on the chosen focal length, iPhoneography promises to reach new heights.

For video recording, the Pro models offer Action mode for steadier footage, and also ProRes up to 4K at both 30fps and 24fps. In addition, it is now possible to seamlessly edit with other pro footage in 4K at 24fps or 30fps. You can even edit the depth effect after capture. Apple says the iPhone 14 Pro models are the only smartphones in the world that let you shoot, view, edit, and share in ProRes or Dolby Vision HDR.

All this is powered by a new A16 Bionic chip, the first Apple chip fabricated using a new 4–nanometer process. Real–world performance gains remain to be seen, but Apple is equally emphasizing power efficiency, giving up to 29 hours video playback on iPhone 14 Pro Max, and up to 23 hours on iPhone 14 Pro. Both are one hour more than their predecessors.

The iPhone 14 Pro lineup in the US also have no physical SIM tray, just an eSIM with dual eSIM support. The cases are surgical–grade stainless steel, like that of iPhone 13 Pro, and available in four new finishes.
