Add to Dock

You can now add a website to your Dock, and use it as an app

-

DO YOU EVER wish your favorite website was available as a self– contained app instead, for super quick and easy access? On mobile devices, this is no problem at all. Just open a website, tap the Share button and select Add to Home Screen. The site appears as an app icon. It’s great if you want, for example, to add Wordle to your Home Screen so you can use it like an app when you wish to play. With macOS Sonoma, you can do something similar on the Mac.

1 Open website

Launch Safari and open the website you wish to use as an app. Click on the Share button, and in the menu that opens, select the option "Add to Dock". A window appears, from which you can edit its name (which will be the name of the app) and the URL, if you wish. Click the Add button.

2 Find the app

The website then gets turned into a standalone app. You can see it in the Dock, just to the left of the first divider. It can also be found on the Launchpad, with the other apps, and in the folder Macintosh HD > Users > [your name] > Applications. The website’s tab icon is used for the app icon.

3 Manage the app

If you’d rather have the web app in your regular Applications folder, you can move it there if you wish. You can remove it from the Dock too; it still opens when you click it in the Applications folder or the Launchpad, or type the name of the app into Spotlight and launch it from there.

4 The app in action

The app functions independently of Safari. It can be minimized or made full screen, and works with Mission Control and Stage Manager, just like any other app. The toolbar at the top of the app window is greatly simplified. It might have navigation controls, depending on the website, but you won’t have to wade through the entire Safari toolbar when using a web app.

5 Your settings

Links on sites you’ve turned into web apps function as normal. Cookies from Safari for that site are carried over to the web app, so if you automatically log in to the site, this is also true for the app. If you need to enter your details to log on, the web app has the same access to Passwords and Autofill as Safari, so you can log in without too much fuss — especially if you have Fingerprint ID on your keyboard. Notification settings are retained too.
