What’s streaming

To get the best from the app you really need an Apple TV+ subscription. This enables you to browse the service’s increasingly extensive library. You can browse Apple’s suggestions, or use the search field at the top of the sidebar.

Send a stream

If you own an AirPlay-compatible device, you can send the video or audio directly to it. Start playing a movie or TV show, then click the AirPlay button in the lower right. Now choose where you want to send the stream to.

Find a show

What used to be the iTunes Store can now be found under the Movies and TV Shows sections in the sidebar. You can buy or rent movies, and buy either individual TV episodes or entire seasons. You can also buy season passes.

Create your queue

When you find something you’d like to watch, click the “+” button in the top right of the window to add it to Up Next. This is the first section you’ll see in the main Apple TV+ section and on your Apple TV box. Click again to remove it.

Set the subtitles

The next icon along is the Closed Captioning and Subtitles button. Apple TV+ shows tend to have the widest range of subtitles for different languages, but that may not be the case for other shows and for older content.

Rent a movie

When you rent a movie, you have 48 hours to finish watching it after you first press Play, after which it is deleted. Movies you have rented but haven’t watched will remain available for 30 days before they are deleted too.

Save for later

Taking your Mac far from a decent broadband connection? No problem. Click a show, then click “…” in the lower right of an episode thumbnail. Click Download to download it to your Mac instead of simply streaming it.

Adjust the audio

The Audio Options button enables you to switch between soundtracks, for example by changing the language from English to English (AD), which stands for Audio Described. Apple TV+ shows have great AD options.

Examine the extras

If you’ve bought a movie with iTunes Extras, which are like the special features on a DVD, you’ll see a blue tag below the movie information. Click on the tag and a window will open with the extra features ready for you to enjoy.
