Hero of the heart
WANNANUP man Matt Campbell has been recognised as an Aussie Heart Hero for saving the life of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.
Mr Campbell’s story centres on an emergency at Perth Domestic Airport.
He was checking in when someone suddenly approached him and asked for help with a 50-year old man who had collapsed nearby and struck his head.
Mr Campbell rushed to observe the man’s state and determined he was in cardiac arrest.
Together with Qantas staff, he located and retrieved a defibrillator, which he applied, and with the help of bystanders provided CPR and one shock to the man.
Much to Mr Campbell’s relief, the man started to show signs of life.
They rolled him into a recovery position and waited for the ambulance.
Later that night, St John contacted Mr Campbell and told him the man had survived and was sitting up in hospital talking.
The Australian Hearts campaign is shining a light on Mr Campbell as part of its push to get more defibrillator in the community.
