Spitting at cashier at checkout leads to $1000 fine

A WOMAN (53) has been fined $1000 after she spat in the face of an Aldi cashier in Mandurah.

Correne Rechelle English pleaded guilty to common assault when she appeared in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police prosecutor Neville Palmer said English was at the checkout at Aldi on Aldgate Street on August 1 and was told by staff she had been banned from the store.

Police said English became upset and verbally abusive. English walked up to a cashier, who was seated and serving customers, and spat in her face before leaving the store.

The duty lawyer said English recognised spitting was the lowest thing she could have done. She said English had impulse control issues and had written a letter apologising to the victim.

The court was told English did not know she had been banned from the store and was humiliated in front of other customers.

English applied for a spent conviction order.

While English did not have a criminal record, Magistrate Longden denied the spent conviction order because English had two previous issues at the store. English was fined $1000, to be paid to the victim.
