Firefighter’s invention protects fire pumps
A VOLUNTEER firefighter and inventor from Narbethong has developed a pump protection system to help minimise the effects of heat and fire on pumps.
Ron Sheppard and his ‘Pump Defenda’ sprinkler system has won a number of awards for his invention which emits a protective water spray over and around any operating water pump.
The system creates a wet space area which protects the pump from flame and ember attack, and radiant heat meltdown, while reducing the risk of any pump actually causing a fire due to escaping sparks or wind blown dry fuels touching the exhaust manifold.
The sprinkler system also lowers the temperature around the pump, reducing the risk of fuel vaporisation in petrol driven pumps, and allowing the engine to run at cooler, more consistent operating temperatures.
Sheppard’s philosophy, like his invention, is very simple: “protect the very thing that is protecting you”.
Having successfully defended his house during Black Saturday, he attributes it in part to his firefighting pump being protected from the extreme conditions by his invention.
This simple but effective system is well worth consideration by anyone who uses pumps on their property, either for firefighting, or in general use.
