CFA members are off and running
THE Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) State Championships are on again this Labor Day weekend and members from Mansfield CFA brigade will be attending.
Being held in Bendigo, this three day carnival attracts CFA brigades from across Victoria and interstate to compete in a variety of events based on firefighting skills.
Last year the event was held at Warrnambool, so members won’t be having to travel as far to compete this time around.
The first event on the Saturday morning is the Discipline Contest, where brigades don their full ceremonial dress uniform and perform a series of marching drills around a rectangular course, with precision, timing and synchronisation the key elements.
Thereafter, the day’s activities centre around the brigade running teams who compete in a series of skill contests utilising firefighting equipment including hoses, hydrants, carts, ladders and pumpers.
Events range from single person drills, up to eight person cart and hose races, held over the three days.
On the Saturday night, the streets of Bendigo will be lit up, as all the brigades march through town in the traditional torchlight parade, similar to what we see in Mansfield but on a far bigger scale.
Camaraderie among CFA volunteers is very strong, and the weekend provides a great opportunity for volunteers to come together in a spirit of enjoyable competition and socialising, and to put on a show for the hundreds of people who will come along and watch.
Good luck to coach David Ackland and the team from Mansfield at Bendigo this weekend.
