Fire precautions start fire
A FIRE truck and a tanker from Mansfield were called to a grassfire in Howes Creek Road last Friday.
Farmer Peter Yencken had been slashing the verge beside one of his paddocks to create a firebreak, when he actually managed to start a localised fire.
“You can see how high the phalaris was on the verge,” he said.
“I ran over a piece of steel, there was a spark, and suddenly the whole of the grassy verge was on fire.”
Although he called out his own fire truck, the blaze was established and further help was required, but once the local fireys arrived, it was quickly put out.
Mansfield CFA captain Mick Jones said the fire was between the road and a ploughed paddock, so it wasn’t going to run far.
“We won’t be here long,” he said.
SO EASY: A local farmer’s bid to prevent dangerous fires adjacent his property actually resulted in a fire on the road verge.
