Eagles under 16 boys win at Benalla
THE under 16 boys travelled to Benalla for their last tournament together as an U16 team.
First game they came out firing, easily defeating the Benalla B team.
All players got into the swing of the tournament quickly with Will Foster and Dan Walker combining well and successfully scoring off fast breaks and from the outside.
The combination of Tyler Humphrey, Bailey Vogelzang and Lochie Revell ensured they dominated the rebounds and scored easily under the basket.
Mason Spierings showed his vertical leap as he assisted with rebounds and easily intercepted the Benalla passes.
Louis Spierings and Toby Humphrey got into the action, moving the ball quickly down the court and creating scoring opportunities.
I n t he second match against Wodonga the Eagles had a huge height advantage, but didn’t anticipate the speed and deft ball handling of their opponents, however, they soon settled into a rhythm and steadily scored off a range of fast breaks and from inside the key.
Once again the Eagles came away with a convincing win.
On Sunday morning the determined Eagles took on Deniliquin.
The first half was neck and neck, but the Eagles showed great endurance and slowly crept away to a healthy lead, teamwork being the key as the Eagles showed exactly how a team game should be played.
The final scheduled game was against a huge Benalla A team.
In this very physical game the boys stayed strong and calm.
They continued to play hard and put points on the board and the game stayed within two to three points with the lead changing numerous times.
Unfortunately the final siren left the Eagles just short of the win.
There were some anxious moments waiting to see if the boys had done enough to secure a grand final berth.
A grand final spot was theirs and they were to come up against the Deniliquin team they met earlier in the day.
The game was close at half time, but once again the Eagles’ determination and fitness, along with their cool heads, allowed them to win their first grand final of the season.
