Under 14s just miss grand final in Benalla

Mansfield Courier - - SPORT - By MEAGAN THORBURN

ONCE again the under 14 boys stepped up and played their latest basketball tournament with fierce determination, and hearts larger than their physical size.

The team of Aden Phillips, Luke Murray, Tom Fraser, Oliver Walker, Harry Mahoney, Sam King, Patrick Mahoney and Tynan Mims (out with injury, Connor Humphrey and Blake Azzopardi), faced up to the challenge at Benalla recently.

In their first game, the boys went down by seven points, to a much taller Benalla side, but that would be their only loss for the weekend.

A nail biter in the second round against Wodonga saw the boys down by one point, with only six seconds left on the clock.

A heroic interception and two point fast break by Harry Mahoney sealed the intense match for them.

Round three and Shepparton had the height.

Pat Mahoney was now out with injury (to add to the growing list), but the boys had the patience and persistence to come away with a six point win.

Sunday’s game against Yarrawonga-Mulwala was going to be tough from the tip off.

Every single one of the boys kept a level head and they kept control of the game. It was close right to the end. Yarrawonga-Mulwala was fighting hard and with the Eagle boys up by only one point, it was Tom Fraser this time, sealing the emotional win with a three point swish.

Though the boys took three hard fought wins, they missed out on a grand final placing, only by a small percentage.

An effort to be proud of, well done to all the boys.
