Fire stopped in its tracks

Mansfield Courier - - OPINIONS / PEOPLE -

THE mowing of a further block of land on the outskirts of Mansfield caused yet another fire on Friday.

On Friday afternoon a youth has started mowing a block at Kate Court (Kareen Hills Estate) when 300-400mm high grass caught alight.

He had been dropped off by an older male who has left him there with the trailer and fuel.

The mower had been fuelled and the nozzle left in so the can was effectively open next to the trailer.

It was reported the youth worked hard to put the fire out, but a considerable area was burnt coming to within 25 metres of a neighboring house.

Two Mansfield CFA units arrived to help as well as the Mansfield Shire fire prevention officer, John Rowe, and police officers.

While the fire was, to a degree, a bit of bad luck, the problem was the f a c t t he youth had no f i r e f i ghti ng equipment, no knapsack spray, nor had arranged any access to use any water from any neighbor.

There is no water connected on the block.

Should that fire have gone much further it had the possibility of incurring significant damage.
