Hectic weekend for Labor Day tournament

IT was a hectic weekend at the Mansfield Bowls Club for Labor Day weekend with two days of the annual tournament matches being played.

Up for grabs on Saturday was $1500 in prize monies while Sunday’s best took home a total of $1200.

Weather conditions were perfect for both days of competitio­n which saw more than 100 bowlers take to the perfectly groomed greens.

Organised by the men’s group of the club, Saturday’s games saw teams of three playing two bowls competitio­ns while on Sunday teams of four lined up for the day.

Teams from as far away as Torquay, Euroa, Wangaratta, Moyhu, Benalla, Alexandra, Eildon, Seymour and Violet Town as well as many of the Mansfield members pitted their skills against each other.

Saturday’s winners were the team from Euroa of Nola Boz, Margaretha Cerini and Primo Boz As the sun set over the Recreation Reserve last week, the Eagles netballers were hard at training getting ready for the season ahead. Here (from top to bottom) Rose Hood, Sophie Mitchell, Jess Harris and Kate Challen were building strength with some tyre work. with a point score of 48.

Second were Bruno Meneguzzi, Graham Oats and Bob McCormick of Wangaratta (47) while the team led by Ian Layfield (41) from Eildon took out third place.

On Sunday the winners and runners up again received cash prizes with the Moira team of Ron Arendt, Pat Cherry, Dale Goss and Vicki Armstrong first while the mixed Torquay/Mansfield team of Graham and Suzanne Lund, and Marian Ryan and Frank Manchester were second.

Major sponsors for the weekend included Martin’s Garage, High Country Smash Repair, Clark & Co Real Estate and Les Wood.

The next competitio­n for the club will take place this weekend over two days being the Men’s Triples championsh­ips.

St Patrick’s Day next Tuesday, March 17 will be celebrated with social bowls and everyone is asked to stay for lunch and wear green to honor St Pat.

President, Bob Appleby, is still taking names for a car rally to be held on Friday, March 20, followed by a quick game of bowls and then a barbecue tea.

“This is strictly a social event aimed at just having lots of fun, and all club members and friends are encouraged to come along,” Appleby said.
