Mansfield athletes compete at state cross country

Mansfield Courier - - COURIER SCOREBOARD - By SUE McCORMACK

A SMALL group of Mansfield athletes braved a cold windy day at Westerfolds Park Templestowe for the Little Athletics Victoria State Cross Country event last Saturday, July 25.

Sam and Oscar Guppy were there to give it a go and see if it is something they might like to pursue further in the future.

The pace was fast and furious around the 1km course, and both boys proved their stamina by passing many athletes up heartbreak hill, but were outsprinted on the flat to the finish line.

It was a great effort up against a group of athletes who have spent the last 10 weeks competing in the winter cross country series.

Oscar placed 57 in the under 7 boys and Sam 22nd in the under 8 boys.

The other two athletes competing for Mansfield were Brooke Mullins and Tynan Mims, both fantastic distance runners who have had the opportunity to train for and compete in the 10 week winter cross country series through their affiliation with the Yarra Ranges Athletics club.

Mims and Mullins raced over a 3km course in big combined fields, the track undulating over a number of hills at a cracking pace.

Mullins placed sixth in the under 13 girls and Mims had a fantastic race coming home with a silver in the under 14 boys event.
