National child protection advocate Bravehearts is calling on ‘children’s champions’ in communities right across Australia to participate and donate at t he 19th annual White Balloon Day on Friday, September 11 – a key awareness and fundraising campaign to protect Aussie kids.
Held during Child Protection Week (September 6-12), the event brings together residents, schools, governments, police, survivors, ambassadors, corporates and organisations to heighten awareness around the importance of protecting children.
More than 1000 registered events t ook place i n communities across Australia last year to raise funds and share Bravehearts’ vision to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.
Funds raised helped Bravehearts to educate more than 83,500 children with personal safety and support more than 5000 kids and their families with specialist counselling services over the past year.
Bravehearts founder and chief executive officer Hetty Johnston, says White Balloon Day is a symbol of hope for the one in five Australian children who will be sexually harmed before their 18th birthday.
“White Balloon Day i s about raising awareness and funds to enable the continued delivery of vital support and prevention programs and giving kids the confidence to come forward and break the silence,” Mrs Johnston said.
“From something as simple as wearing white and tying a white balloon to a letterbox, to hosting a fundraising event or luncheon, everyone can get involved.
“Protecting children is everyone’s business.
“We know that for the most part this crime is preventable, we just need adults to step forward and to prioritise the safety of our children.
“Let’s rise up and work together to protect the most vulnerable members of the community – our kids.”
