A close contest in finals
LAST Wednesday the Mixed Basketball elimination finals were held at the Mansfield Sporting Complex with two close games.
Up first, league leaders, The Big Ballers took on The Cowboys.
In previous meetings the Ballers rolled the Cowboys but on this occasion, good passing and a succession of goals by Sam Corden and Patrick Cahill saw the Cowboys jump ahead to a 35 to 20 lead at half time.
Emily Hutchins answered with 15 for the Ballers and Gracie Hallam popped in three smooth baskets but the damage was done.
Shannon Cameron added 15 for the Cowboys and solid defence saw Josh Green limited to 10 points with the final score 53 to 42 in favour of the Cowboys.
Match two was a nail-biter with Merrijig taking on the Pigmy Possums and the loser being eliminated.
Both teams played with determination with Amy Jewson hitting 12 points and everyone else sharing the scoring as well: Andrew Mortlock 7, Ange Robinson 7, Darren Loughridge 9 and Aubrey Gonsalves 6.
At the siren the score was 24 all.
Going into extra time, both teams had nine fouls and subsequently traded shots from the free throw line.
With less than half a minute to go Ange Robinson made a great drive to the basket to see Merrijig up by one point.
In a frenzied final fifteen seconds, the Possums regained possession and Will Stow tied up to the three point line and sunk it with four seconds remaining to see the Pygmy Possums home by two points.
This week Pygmy Possums versus Big Ballers for the chance to play the Cowboys in the grand final.
