Mansfield Red farewells with a win as Blue are finals bound
A FITTING finish to the last round of the home and away matches in the Euroa District Ladies Winter Tennis saw Mansfield Red vs Mansfield Blue.
Blue was already guaranteed a spot in the semi final, with only the position to be determined.
Red, for the first time in many years, (in fact so long ago no one can remember) could not make the semis, so this was not a do or die match.
Although you would have thought Red had the chance of making the semis as they played with such gusto to fin- ish their season on a high.
On what was perfect weather conditions, the players took to the court.
Karyn Fraser and Deb Mims against Lisa Lang and Clare Beecham got off to a great start, taking the first three games.
Blue fought back and a battle ensued, with Red taking the set 8-5.
Next door Melva Anstee and Loretta Armitage against Jill Breadon and Amanda Cleeland had a slow start but fought back going down 5-8.
So it was back to the start with an even playing field.
Fraser and Anstee took on Lang and Breadon, clawing to a tie-breaker after being down by a few games, which fell Red’s way.
Mims and Armitage wanted the same result as they fought a battle against Beecham and Cleeland taking out a tie breaker also.
Despite being t hree sets to one up there was only two games the difference.
The last round the scores were 8-5 in both sets, each to Red.
An afternoon tea followed reflecting on the season and wishing the Blue team all the best against Terip Terip this week, with Benalla Playing Euroa Purple in the semi finals at Mansfield. Terip 2-32 Euroa Pink 32.5
