Under 14s post solid score

Mansfield Courier - - SPORT - By PETER SCALES

SATURDAY morning saw Delatite’s under 14s team travel to Benalla to play Wangaratta’s City Colts (Blue).

A late change of venue saw the game shifted to the turf wicket at the Racecourse Oval.

After a close assessment of the wicket and winning the toss, skipper Lachy Scales chose to bat first.

Luke Berriman opened up with Tom Dunstan and the pair took some of the shine off the new ball, taking the score to 15 before Dunstan was out, pulling the ball to mid-wicket.

A great catch completed by Declan Callahan, who was sub-fielding for Colts.

After an exchange of ‘sorry’s’ and laughs Dunstan was on his way, replaced by Scales.

He and Berriman had a great partnership, moving the score to 48, when Berriman was bowled for a patient 12.

Cody George came and went quickly and Sam Bell made an important five runs, steadying the innings with his captain.

Bell was caught out and Jake Berry quickly followed, with Delatite struggling somewhat at 5/60.

The remaining batsmen all put their heads down and the team did not lose another wicket for the day, with several players retiring not out - Scales (26), Isaac Murray (8), Prabh Sandhu (6) and Max Lange (10).

Rounding out the innings, Billy Dunstan and Callahan made 8 and 7 not out respectively, both hitting powerful fours on the big Racecourse ground.

Assisted by some ordinary bowling, with Colts yielding 48 extras, Delatite posted 5/142 from their 42 overs.

This was a very strong batting performance, particularly considering that many players have had limited exposure to turf cricket.

Despite a number of players being away this Saturday, the boys should be able to defend this total to post their third win of the season.
