On the back of a bull
THE month of October saw local Merrijig bull rider Will Purcell being crowned the Canadian Bull Riders Champion, which has also seen him take out the October nomination for Sportsperson of the Year.
Purcell travelled to Calgary in late May to pursue his bull riding career and since being over there he has made quite an impact.
He attended rodeos most weekends and he moved up the standings to near the top in a field of 83 riders.
Bull Riders Canada Association is the main circuit he is riding and the association writes extensively on Purcell’s achievements, special- ly detailing his rides on a bull called ‘Paradise City of the X6 Ranch’.
Purcell and the beast have met three times this year and so far the score is Purcell three, Paradise City zero.
“We get along really well,” he said of the bovine athlete.
“He’s a bunch of fun and a great bull.”
As a result of his success, he had been awarded sufficient points to edge into second place.
“I also had a really nice draw in the long round,” Purcell said.
“I’m just grateful things are coming together.”
According to the association’s website, “coming together is an understatement as the Merrijig, Australia man has now won three BRC events titles in his first summer in Canada”.
“Only here since May, Purcell also became the fifth man to cross the $10,000 mark in season earnings on Saturday evening in Sangudo and sits fourth in the nation.
“Just a week ago Paradise City and the Aussie combined for the AOA Bikes & Bulls win.”
A win in the last round saw him crowned 2016 champion.
Purcell planned to perhaps come back for Christmas, but is enjoying his life over there so much that the plans have now extended to a few years.
AUSSIE STAR: Will Purcell has been able to hold on to ferocious bulls like this one so well that he is carving out an international reputation.
