Coali­tion’s $1 bil­lion road re­pair pledge

CINDY McLeish (MLA, Eil­don) has an­nounced a Lib­eral Gov­ern­ment will in­vest $1 bil­lion in up­grad­ing and re­pair­ing coun­try roads and bridges.

“A Lib­eral Gov­ern­ment will in­vest $1 bil­lion over 10 years roads saves coun­try lives,” Ms McLeish said.

Fund­ing for the $1 bil­lion of $400 mil­lion for the Coun­try Roads and Bridges pro­gram, an­other $400 mil­lion for tar­geted road restora­tion and a $200 mil­lion boost for gen­eral road main­te­nance.

“This ap­proach has been sup­ported by the Au­di­tor-Gen- eral who found in 2016 that La­bor was crit­i­cally un­der­spend­ing on road main­te­nance.”

Un­der the project, VicRoads will be in­structed to de­velop a pro­gram of works each year based on in­put from the com­mu­nity and stake­hold­ers.

The $1 bil­lion in fund­ing will main­te­nance and restora­tion ini­tia­tives de­liv­ered by VicRoads.

A new smart phone app will also be de­vel­oped to al­low mo­torists to re­port road haz­ards in real-time.

“This will rev­o­lu­tionise re­sponse times for ur­gent re­pair work to min­imise the dan­ger of ac­ci­dents that re­sult in in­jury or worse,” Ms McLeish said.
