Rising basketballers head to Benalla
THIS year, 13 players from the Mansfield Basketball Association attended the under 12 skills days held over the weekend in Benalla.
The U12 skills days are for players of all abilities and standards and are open to all athletes at country associations.
The coaching programs concentrate on the individual skills relevant for players in the U12 age group.
This program is run in July each year, and players can be selected to represent country Victoria at the BVC Jamboree in Echuca, which takes place in September each year.
The under 12 skills days are designed to offer junior basketballers from all associations the opportunity to receive coaching to develop their skills to the highest possible level.
The U12 skills days are for players born in 2008 and 2009.
A full day packed with skills and drills saw players check-in from 9.30am for a 10am start and day concluded at 4pm.
Players received a T-shirt, drink bottle and ball.
In total, 120 boys and 120 girls were selected from the nine regional venues of the U12 skills days, and local basketballer Astin Browning was selected for the BVC U12 Basketball Jamboree, held at the Echuca Basketball Stadium from September 21-24.
The 2019 BVC Jamboree will feature:
• matches against teams of players from Country Victoria;
• guest speaker s for the parents’ dinner;
• guest coach s social activities for players and parents;
• parents coaching clinic and
• training clinics for all players
Only top-age athletes who excel at the skills days are selected by the region coaches for this prestigious event.
With over 1000 athletes participating in this year’s under 12 skills days (compared to 820 last year), it’s clear there is a huge desire for kids to participate in country Victorian basketball because of the energy associated with the sport throughout the state.
