Big day on the Woods Point range

Mansfield Courier - - Courier Sport - By JOHN WOOD

A WARM and sunny day greeted the competitors at the Woods Point Gun Club for the annual President’s Trophy shoot and the Brian Prothero Memorial Trophy event.

The day started with the obligatory Eye Opener that saw Ian Findlay, Cameron Trevitt, Cranky McCall and Andrew Ferrari returning 29/30 to share the AA Grade cash.

Allan Kidd won A Grade, 27/30 with Steven Howlett successful in B Grade, 29/30.

Kirsten Chinn’s 28/30 was enough for her to take the C Grade cash prize outright.

Next we had the 25 target Double Barrel President’s Trophy event sponsored by John and Annette Wood.

Phillip Woods started well with a 25/25 score shortly followed by Phillip Desmond, Steven Howlett, McCall and David Allen to bring them to a shoot off for the trophy.

After seven rounds, both Desmond and Woods missed a target to take them out of trophy contention with Allen next to fall at target 11.

Howlett and McCall continued spirited competition until target 17 when Howlett let one go.

Cranky McCall became the 47th winner of the President’s Trophy, 42/42 and he also snagged the AA Grade prize winner as well.

Phillip Desmond was 2nd in AA.

A Grade saw a clear win for Allen 32/32, Woods 2nd, 31/32 while B Grade was won by Howlett 25/25 from Laurie Poile 2nd, 23/25.

Kirsten Chinn took C Grade 22/25 from Matthew Ewert, 20/25.

After the lunch break the 25 target Handicap Brian Prothero Memorial was completed with Steven Bedggood, Geoff Hill and Daniel Chinn going into a shoot off for the trophy after returning 24/25 scores.

This was an extremely short shoot off with Bedggood missing his first target and Hill failing one target later.

All Chinn had to do was hit his target to win and as he shot and the pieces of the target fell to the ground, Daniel was able to hold aloft the Brian Prothero Memorial Trophy with a score 26/27.

Hill took second place 25/27 and Bedggood third, 24/26.

Daryl Ewert on 23/25 took the fourth place prize.

Brian Prothero was a wellknown and hard-working man in Woods Point and apart from being one of our original members was always very supportive of both his community and our club.

The event was proudly sponsored by the Prothero family and the Woods Point Gun Club.

To finish the day we had a 25 target President’s Tower Championship sponsored by long term member Tom Apps and his wife Cheryl.

Chuck Lay and Trevor Ewert returned perfect 25/25 scores to put them into a shoot off for the championship sash and after six targets, Lay left one still flying leaving Ewert to shoot for the prize.

He didn’t miss and secured the sash with a final score of 31/31, Lay taking home second place 30/31.

Daryl Ewert and Daniel Chinn shot off for the minor placings with Ewert taking third place 26/27, from Chinn on fourth 25/27

The Vice President’s Overall High Gun for the day, sponsored by Peter and Ellen West, was won by Daryl Ewert with a great score of 70/75 from a day of three quite different events.

A great lunch and afternoon tea saw many happy faces returning home after another memorable shoot.

Our next shoot is our end of year Christmas shoot on Sunday, December 8 starting at 9.30am.

Lots of fun and lots of prizes. See you there.

SUCCESS: Winners and sponsors of the President’s Trophy shoot included (from left) John Wood (president and sponsor), Will and Craig Prothero (sponsors), Daniel Chinn, Daryl Ewert, Tom Apps, Trevor Ewert and Cranky McCall.
