Lady golfers getting into the festive spirit

Mansfield Courier - - Courier Sport - By LINDA TERRY

PREPARATIONS are well under way for a crazy day for our Christmas celebration event this week.

Santa is primed, the decorations are prepared, a little bit of fancy cooking is being undertaken and plans are afoot for a fun, laughter-filled 14 holes of golf on Wednesday for nearly 40 ladies.

Wednesday golf was a Summer Cup stableford round, and a good field of 19 ladies took part.

Winning with a lovely 36 points was Louise Calvert-Jones and runner up Donna Sedgman with 35.

Line balls went to Gayle Wells, Lyn Holland and Sam Bailey all with 34, Millie Cumming and Meg Broomfield with 33 and Norma Friday and Lyn Poulson both with 30 points.

Thursday’s 9-hole George Walker was won by Nicki Cooper with 16 points.

On Saturday it was a par round, and four girls came in with -4, but the money, on a count-back, went to Donna Sedgman.

Runner up was Andrea Marsden. Marion Sargeant and Sam Bailey were the other two in the mix with -4.

Sam Bailey also picked up the nearest the pins on the third and 16th.

On Friday it was the final home and away round for our 4BBB summer pennant and it was a highly anticipated clash for Mansfield against Bright with the winner to go through to the final against Jubilee next week.

Confidence was high after our great win the previous week, but sadly it was not to be.

The pairing of Gayle Wells and Linda Terry came out strongly and despite a great fight back from four down by the Bright pair and some stressful moments, they were able to hold on to the lead throughout the match to win 2/1.

Our other pairs also had tough battles, but Lyn Holland and Lesley Anderson were just pipped to lose on the 18th and Nicki Cooper and Lyn Poulson

lost on the 16th, resulting in the 1-2 loss for the team.

So it is off to Myrtleford next week to play off for third and fourth place while Bright gets to take on Jubilee for the crown.

Well done to all the girls who’ve taken part this year, however, and we certainly had a lot of fun with the Bright girls in this friendly format of pennant.

Our Christmas presentation this week will also include the ladies Premier League presentation and Player of the Year count down.

Winners of the Premier League for 2020 were the Squirters team of Donna Sedgman, Gayle Wells and Sue Parsons – great effort girls.
