New date for free youth song-writing camp
YOUNG people aged 1218 years old with an interest in song-writing and experience on an instrument, vocals or producing, have the opportunity to participate in Mansfield Shire Youth Services’ first ever songwriters’ camp.
The Mansfield FReeZA team will deliver the ‘Emerging Sounds’ song-writers’ and producers’ camp for youth at Merrijig Lodge from February 15-16 in 2020.
Mansfield Shire Council’s FReeZA program officer Kylie Peel said the camp is designed specifically for 12 to 18 year olds with an existing interest in song-writing or producing.
“We have so many talented emerging artists in Mansfield,” Ms Peel said.
“This camp is an incredible opportunity for them to learn from industry professionals and build their skill levels for the future.
“If you know someone who would benefit from this experience, please spread the word.
“Participants will walk away with their own original piece of music that we can help them enter into Triple J’s ‘Unearthed High’ competition for 2020,” she said.
‘Emerging Sounds’ will offer workshops that teach writing and performing a song within a band, creating lyrics, melodies and enhancing chords, as well as specialised training on producing, mixing, sampling and recording, from a certified Ableton trainer on software Ableton Live.
There will also be a question and answer session with industry professionals and mentors, covering topics such as creating songs, recording, approaching labels, booking venues, and future opportunities within the music industry.
‘Emerging Sounds’ has only 20 spaces available.
Applications close on Friday, January 17, 2020, so get in quick.

HAPPY 90TH: It was double celebrations at the Mansfield Masonic Lodge last week when members held their annual Christmas party but also acknowledged the 90th birthday of long-standing member Brother Ron Roberts. A birthday cake was presented to Bro Roberts with all singing the happy birthday song to him. He was also presented with a Masonic Lodge t-shirt which was then signed on the back by all members.
