Pre-season tournament set to be big
THE Mansfield Bowls Club will hold its first tournament of the 2021/22 season this coming Sunday with more than 40 bowlers set to hit the greens.
Although the spring/ summer bowls season is not officially open as yet, the match committee has organised a triples tournament to be played this Sunday and more than 40 bowlers have registered their interest.
The prize monies have been kindly donated by Kris Humphrey of Mansfield Laundry Matt.
In the lead up to this tournament more bowlers have been out on the greens practicing with some interesting social bowls being played on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
Up to 28 players have attended these practice matches and there has also been activity on the back green with members coming in and practicing on their own - obviously anxious to see the season start soon.
In the meantime the indoor bowls sessions on Sunday afternoons have restarted following the latest COVID lockdown.
Unfortunately only nine players attended last Sunday but there was still plenty of fun to be had by all.
Winners on the day were the team of Keith Millott, Lyn Foots and Scotty Hamilton with a score of 35 shots, outdoing the pair of Marta Mueck and first time player John Lobbe.
The official start for the Mansfield Bowls Club season will be held on Sunday, September 26 with a lunch followed by bowls.
The club is also hosting a group of younger players from the Mansfield Secondary College for three weeks with some promising young men among them.
Club members have been helping coach these teens.
The club is also willing to host corporate/trades days with barbecues and play - a great idea when getting closer to the Christmas season.
Bookings and enquiries can be made through the club.
All members are reminded to watch the noticeboards for the current COVID restrictions.
Social bowls lists are also on the outside noticeboards with names due in for play by 12.30 on each of the Tuesdays and Fridays.
