Golf returns to hibernation

- By PHIL CONWAY

PERHAPS short lived the break in lockdowns saw players out on the course for two days of men’s competition and then it was back into COVID lockdowns for Mansfield golfers.

Tuesday’s competition saw a field of 17 players out playing Stableford from the gold tees using their normal handicaps.

The winner was Brad Grant (10) with a mammoth 48 points from Alan Eustace (13) with an equally impressive 47 points.

It is amazing what occurs when playing a novelty event.

Line balls went down to 42 points on a countback.

The nearest the pins on the par threes were: Brad Grant on the third, Peter Dolling on the seventh, Bob Speed on the ninth, Phil Conway on the 12th and

Brad Grant on the 16th.

Thursday’s competition was also a Stableford event with 57 competitors out on a well manicured track.

The winner of Division One was Brad Grant (10) with 39 points from runnerup Allan Agar (15) with 37 points, and third place went to Phil Conway (11) with 34 points.

The winner of Division Two was Shane Brook (31) with a great 40 points from Len Foster (20) with 31 points and in third place was John Saggers (17) with 30 points.

The nearest the pins were Fred Rogers on the third, Mark Bettany on the seventh, Oli Pearson on the ninth and on the 12th, and Don Clutterbuck on the 16th.

The NTP second shot on the 18th was Bob Cullen.

Ball rundown went to 28 points on a countback.

The rabbits for the day were Laurie Harcus and

Gary Johnson.

Saturday’s event was meant to be an Irish Four Person Stableford event, however, thanks to an extremely late call for a lockdown the event has been postponed to a date later in the year.
