Ovens and King still to decide fate of finals

-

IT’S a scenario local footballers and netballers are far too used to, but once again the weekend’s scheduled community sports were cancelled due to regional Victoria entering a strict lockdown.

The announcement came through to O&K general manager Cam Green late Friday night, a matter of hours before the league’s first round of finals matches were slated to begin.

“There was talk during the day that we were going to go into lockdown anyway,” Green said.

“As regional Victorians and Victorians, we can all see when there are cases regionally or when there are more cases where they’re not supposed to be, we’re pretty quick to know we’re going into lockdown.

“A lot of work from a lot of people goes into these sorts of things, from the volunteer level to club level to player level to league level - just to get it ripped away from us literally less than 12 hours before our first game starts, it’s very, very tough.”

Green said the O&K board would meet over the coming days to figure out exactly how the rest of the season will look like, but said the first step was crystal clear.

“We need to get out of lockdown first, and it’s been pushed all the way to September 2, this lockdown, at 11.59pm - it doesn’t really give us a heap of scope,” he said.

“There is definitely framework in place for that sort of thing - how that looks is still being determined.

“The O&K will talk at board level over the next couple of days, and hopefully we’ll have a bit more clarity.

“I think we’ll keep it with the traditional two day format, I’m pretty confident in that, it just makes it easier to manage under these COVID restrictions as well.

“In terms of everything being on the table, we’ll leave that up to the board, they make the decisions on that.”
