Winter competition wraps for the Benalla Hockey Club

- By BEC LITTLER & LEE MANNING

THE Benalla Hockey Club has wrapped up winter competition with the conclusion of Stick 2 Hockey and the U10s.

The Stick 2 Hockey program continued on from Hook In2 Hockey with fun games and modified hockey games for all juniors under 10.

Many also competed over in Shepparton in the three U10 round-robin tournaments.

All enjoyed old favourites Hockey Tennis, Cut the Cake and Number Hockey, and learnt a few new twists including Zone Hockey.

During mini games, Bill Christie dribbled and passed well, Archie Lines enjoyed being a full back, Will Keen showed his skill zooming the ball along the wings, and Bjorn McCulloch made some great tackles in the midfield as a half-back.

Many also enjoyed playing competition quarter-field games on the fast synthetic turf in Shepparton.

It was fantastic seeing all players’ skills, team play and confidence grow with each round robin.

Gossamer Bowman created plenty of runs and space in the forward line with strong passes.

New players Jack and Frank Christie used their speed and new ball skills to outmanoeuvre their opponents, with Jack scoring his first two goals.

Emma Moore was solid protecting the goal as a full back.

Abbie Thannhauser made some determined tackles, and stopped some certain goals in defence.

Brother Teddy filling in was so solid in defence that the ball never got past him.

Finn Thompson made some good runs up the wing and passed well.

Experienced players helped support the younger ones, with Liam Carroll, Jack Hurley and Hadassah Adams helping to make team plays and scoring some handy goals themselves.

The Benalla Hockey Tigers thank all of their volunteers, including coaches, team managers and committee members for a great season in 2021.

The Benalla Hockey Club also appreciates the ongoing support of sponsors Ultimate Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Cellarbrations Benalla, Nutrien Ag Solutions Benalla, Delatite Steel, and Bridgestone Benalla; supporters Benalla Ensign and Mansfield Courier; and the Benalla Rural City Community Grants program.

Benalla will host their own fun adults vs juniors games on Sunday, October 24 to finish the season off, with club presentations and the AGM in between games.
