COLOUR CUES
Hair feeling dull and frizzy? We discover how to keep your locks glossy right up to your next colour appointment
Keeping your colour looking its best every day may seem like an unachievable goal, especially when summer hits. But experts say that glossy hair right around the clock is achievable with a mix of TLC, quality at-home products and know-how.
DRY AND FRIZZY
“If you aren’t giving hair enough hydration, it may start to feel dry or frizzy,” says Jamie Furlan, co-owner of LNDN Hair in Melbourne, Kérastase ambassador and AHFA 2020 Australian Hairdresser of the Year. This is particularly an issue in summer when moving in and out of air-conditioning and spending days at the beach or in the pool. To keep unmanageable hair at bay, enlist hydrating products.
TRY Kérastase Chroma Absolu Filler Hair Mask, $69. Dosed with amino acids, this restorer helps restore high shine to medium to thick hair types
BREAKAGES
“Breakage is the biggest issue of coloured hair,” says Danni Solier, co-owner of LNDN Hair, Kérastase ambassador and AHFA 2021 Creative Colourist of the Year. If you find that breakages are significant, you may need a trim to restore hair to optimal health. Then, regularly applying a weightless oil will help prevent future damage.
TRY Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Hair Oil, 100ml, $65, which uses camellia, marula and argan oils to add shine and protect against breakages.
FADING FAST
The main reason for colour fade is a lack of moisture. “Just as our body needs hydration to survive, so does our hair and colour,” says Furlan. To keep coloured hair in peak condition, find a range formulated to nourish coloured hair.
TRY Kérastase Chroma Bain Riche Respect Shampoo Rich, $51. Formulated with lactic acid and healing botanical centella asiatica, this rich formula cleanses as it smooths, nourishes and adds shine to thick coloured hair.
DULL LOCKS
If your locks are starting to look dull just a few weeks after your hair colour appointment, it could be time to find a new colourist. “If you have a good hairdresser, colour should never feel dull,” says Solier. Communication also pays dividends, she says, so make sure you discuss your colour goals with your hairdresser before you commit so you stay happy.
AT HOME MAINTENANCE
Upkeep at home will keep your colour looking fresh for weeks and weeks. Furlan recommends an at-home gloss to seal cuticles and deliver shine. “It will reinvigorate the colour,” he says.
TRY Kérastase Chroma Absolu Fluid Gloss, $58, a clever fluid-to-cream formula goes on post shampoo and rinses to transform hair into glossy goodness.
