STATE NOD FOR GOALIE
Switch to goalie pays off for Chloe
HOCKEY: Since taking position in the goal box, hockey player Chloe Daly has become a regular name on Queensland representative team lists.
With hockey running in the family, the youngster has been on a hockey field since she was four, but it was only four years ago she moved from the field to the goal box.
“We didn’t have a goalie on a team and the coach asked if anyone wanted to try it out so I decided to give it a shot,” Chloe said.
“I really enjoyed it so I decided to train for it and keep playing there.”
Since changing to goalie Chloe has been selected in four Queensland teams, with the most recent being the under-14s for indoor hockey.
“She just seems to be a natural in the goal box,” Chloe’s mum Rozan Daly said.
“She has really quick reaction times and ever since she put on the pads she just gone from strength to strength.”
Chloe will compete at the Australian Indoor Championships in New South Wales in January, her second national championships in a row.
It’s an impressive feat for the youngster, who only started playing the indoor format last year.
“When they started up an indoor comp at USC I decided to join to see what it was like and it’s really fun,” Chloe said.
“It’s very different to outdoor, the goal box is slightly smaller, as is the playing area, so it really helps me improve my reaction times, which is helpful when I’m back out of the field.”
The Maroochydore club player said she loves playing goalie and has high hopes for her future.
“I’d love to play for Australia one day, hopefully even make it to the Olympics,” she said.
